How to Reset an IP Address on a Compaq Laptop

Save

When a computer joins a network, it gets an Internet Protocol address that uniquely identifies the computer within the network. The computer keeps using that address until the lease on the address expires, what can happen after anywhere between a few minutes and a few days -- depending on the network configuration. However, you can have your Compaq laptop relinquish the current IP address before its lease is up, and maybe even get a new IP address. Reasons for that include debugging network problems, and fixing conditions that include IP address collisions.

  • Click on "Start," then type "run" into the search box. Click on "Run," then type "cmd" into the text field and press "Enter." A Command window will come up. Click on it to select it.

  • Type the following command into the Command window:

    ipconfig /all

Windows will list all active adapters with their names after the word "adapter" and before the colon, at the beginning of each paragraph. Find the name of the adapter whose IP address you want to reset.

  • Give up your current IP address by typing the following command:

    ipconfig /release "Local Area Connection"

Replace "Local Area Connection" with the adapter name obtained in Step 2. Press "Enter."

  • Give up your current IP address and get a new one by typing the following command:

    ipconfig /renew "Local Area Connection"

Replace "Local Area Connection" with the adapter name obtained in Step 2. Press "Enter."
