How to Update the OS on Your iPod

Update your iPod's operating system to ensure the device's firmware is up to date. Updates often optimize the iPod's performance and add new functionality. You can set up iTunes to check for updates and notify you automatically or you can check for updates manually. Updates are downloaded and installed to your device through iTunes.

  • Connect your iPod to your computer using the docking cable that came with the device.

  • Open iTunes if the program does not open automatically. Click the name of your iPod beneath Devices on the left side of the iTunes program window.

  • Click the "Summary" tab on the right side of the program window and then click "Update" beneath Version.

  • Click "Update" in the dialog box that appears and then click "Agree" to accept the Software License Agreement. Leave the iPod connected until the download and installation are complete. You can safely eject and disconnect your device from the computer when the following message appears in the tan box at the top of the iTunes program window: "iTunes sync is complete. OK to disconnect."

Tips & Warnings

  • Never disconnect your iPod while it is updating or syncing. This could damage your device.
