How to Type Peace Fingers

The two-fingered peace sign originated from the use of the index and middle fingers being held up to form a "V" and was associated with "V for Victory." This was popular during and after World War II. In the 1960s, youths used the same hand symbol, along with the word "Peace." The constant association of the two led to this hand sign being referred to as the peace hand sign. If you want to add the peace fingers to a letter, document or an email, there are several ways to do it.

  • Type a capital "V" for the simplest form of the peace symbol. This is commonly used, but it's not always clear that it's meant to be a symbol.

  • Create a symbol by typing an underscore, a backslash, another underscore, a forward slash and a third underscore, to symbolize a hand with fingers turned both up and down. Because it is a string of characters, "\/_" is more obviously meant to be a symbol than part of a word or a typographical error.

  • Use a lowercase n, a backslash, a forward slash, and two more lowercase n's as another way to type the peace finger sign. The combination of these characters, "n\/nn," resembles a hand with two fingers raised and the others folded down.

Windows Character Map

  • Open the character map. The procedure will vary slightly with different versions of Windows. Click "Start," "Programs" or "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and "Character Map." Alternatively, enter "charmap" in the "Run" box or use the search tool to locate the character map, then click on it to run it.

  • Select "Wingdings" from the drop-down menu on the character map window. Use the first version, not any of the wingdings with numerals after the name.

  • Locate the peace fingers symbol. Click on it to select it.

  • Copy the symbol. Use the "Select" button at the bottom of the character map page or hold down the "Ctrl" key and type "c."

  • Paste the symbol into the document by holding down the "Ctrl" key and typing "v." The character is now typed into your document.

Tips & Warnings

  • When typing the peace fingers using letters, put quotes around the characters to show that it is a special grouping.
  • The character map works with many Windows programs, but will not transfer to notepad or emails using only plain text. Type the peace fingers using letters in those cases.
