How Can I Pick Up WiFi Better on a Laptop?

If your laptop is suffering from sluggish Internet service, a poor wireless signal may be to blame. A wireless router sends the signal through the air, which your laptop then connects to. If you're far from the router, or if there is a lot of interference between the laptop and router, the signal may not be strong enough to make the connection. You can improve the wireless connection on your laptop in several ways, depending on what is causing the issue.

Things You'll Need

  • Network adapter
  • Move your laptop closer to the router location to improve the signal. When the laptop and router are close to each other, the signal will not have to travel a long distance and the connection will improve. You could also move the router closer to where you typically work on your laptop.

  • Reduce interference near your laptop and the router, if possible. Keep metal objects and electronics a few feet away from your laptop while working wirelessly, since metal items and electronics can cause electrical interference that can make the signal weaker. If you have access to the router, move it away from metal objects and place it off of the floor to improve the signal.

  • Select a different wireless channel if you have access to the router. If you are attempting to use your router and there are nearby wireless routers that are using the same channel as you, there is interference that slows your connection. Switch the channel and try accessing Wi-Fi on your laptop to see if there is an improvement.

  • Access the Web interface of your router, if possible, to change the transmission settings. Many routers allow you to boost power from the Web interface if you're experiencing slow Wi-Fi connectivity.

  • Purchase a new network adapter for your laptop. A new network adapter will strengthen the wireless connection between your laptop and the wireless router.

  • Keep your wireless router and network adapter up-to-date by downloading updates when your computer is prompted.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are still having connection issues between the router and your laptop, try a new antenna, a new router or a wireless repeater to improve the signal.
