How to Tell if Your Computer Is WiFi Compatible

Although Wi-Fi compatibility comes standard on many computers, not all systems are equipped to communicate with wireless networks. You can check your computer's hardware profile to determine if a wireless adapter card is installed. If this card is present, your computer has the ability to communicate over wireless protocols. If no such card is present, you need to purchase and install one to access a wireless network.

  • Open the "Start" menu, then click "Control Panel."

  • Click "Hardware and Sound."

  • Click "Device Manager."

  • Click the triangle icon next to "Network adapters" and look for an adapter with "Wi-Fi" or "802.11g" in its name. Your computer is Wi-Fi compatible if it has an adapter that supports wireless connectivity.
