The AR-15 semi-automatic rifle is frequently purchased by civilian shooters. Used for target practice, hunting and home defense, the AR-15 is highly customizable. An M1913 rail -- also called a Picatinny rail -- has flat sides with equally-spaced slots. This allows the mounting of optics, backup iron-sights, lasers or flashlights. A quad rail has four flat sides, allowing the mounting of multiple accessories on one rifle.

Push the magazine-release button, and remove the magazine. Pull back the charging handle. Clear any live rounds from the chamber.
Stand the rifle on end, with the barrel pointing up. Slide the two, long arms of the delta-ring compression tool over the top of the delta ring. Put the hooked edge of the tool inside the magazine well. The delta ring is the round, cone-shaped piece located just behind the hand guard, in front of the receiver.
Grasp the two prongs of the delta-ring compression tool, and push downward; this compresses the delta ring. Continue applying downward pressure, and remove the two halves of the stock's hand guards.
Align the front lip of the top half of the quad rail; slide it under the hand-guard cap. Lower the back half of the guard to line up the rear lip with the slot in the delta ring. The gas tube must line up with the gas-tube slot inside the upper hand-guard.
Slide the front lip of the lower hand-guard. Align the rear lip to line up with the slot in the delta ring. Release the pressure on the delta ring, and remove the compression tool.
Some quad rails are supplied with small screws that lock the top and bottom halves together. Place the screws in the screw holes, and tighten using the Allen wrench.
