How to Delete the Search Box History on Wikipedia

Maintaining your privacy on the Internet can be a full-time task. With every search, your history is being saved, including searches on websites like Wikipedia. Clearing your search history, however, is quite easy and all you need is your browser to do it. Remember that different browsers have different instructions and if you use multiple browsers, you need to delete the search history for each one.

      Click on "Internet Options" inside the Internet Explorer browser and under "Browsing History," hit "Delete." To remove cookies and cache data, check the corresponding boxes next to "Temporary Internet Files," "Cookies," "Forms" and "InPrivateFilteringData." Select "Delete," then hit "OK" and close the Internet Options window.

      Go to the "Tools" menu option if you use Mozilla Firefox, and select "Clear Private Data" and check the "Cache," "Cookies" and "Offline Website Data" boxes. Hit the "Clear Private Data Now" button.

      Open your Safari browser and select the "History" menu option and choose "Clear History," then hit the "Safari" menu button and select "Empty Cache" to remove all search history.

      Select the tool icon in the upper right hand corner of the Google Chrome browser. Go to "Tools." then "Clear Browsing Data" and a new tab will open in Chrome. Next to "Privacy" select "Clear Browsing Data." Select the check boxes of items you want to delete and hit "Clear Browsing Data" one more time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some browsers have the option to only clear recent history from the past hour or from the past few weeks, so make sure you choose the settings you want.

  • This will erase all of your search history, including Wikipedia. Make sure any important pages are bookmarked.
