How to Help Individuals With Writing Birthday Speeches thumbnail
Always consider your audience when writing a birthday speech.

Birthday parties are usually informal events so you have some freedom when constructing a birthday speech. The speech needs to be appropriate for both the person it is intended for and the other people in attendance. For example, you'd likely write a different speech for your brother than you would for your boss. Helping someone else with a birthday speech can be challenging if you don't know the people who will be in attendance. Proper preparation can benefit you when assisting others with their birthday speech writing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Ask the writer who the birthday celebrant is and what their relationship is to the writer. This helps establish how formal or informal the speech should be and what type of language would be appropriate.

    • 2

Discuss the venue for the party. A party in a children's restaurant will likely require a different type of speech than one held in a hotel ballroom.

    • 3

Brainstorm ideas for the speech by writing them down on a piece of paper. Write down jokes, stories involving the writer and the birthday recipient and anything else that comes to mind. For example, if the birthday is celebrating someone turning 60, you can consider "senior citizen" or "old age" jokes if they are appropriate to the environment.

    • 4

Construct the speech with an introduction, a few body paragraphs and a conclusion. The more concise the speech, the better received the speech is likely to be.

    • 5

After you have a rough draft formulated, watch the writer deliver the speech. Advise him on what to take out or what sections work best so the speech can be revised and retooled prior to the party.
