How to Announce Your Marriage

Announce your good news immediately after the wedding.

Sending out wedding announcements is very different than sending out wedding invitations. For one thing, they go out after the wedding, typically to people who were not invited to the event. If you are having a small wedding, it is perfectly OK to send invitations to those you want to attend the ceremony and announcements to those you don't have room to accommodate. You can also place an announcement in your local newspaper. Also, for your virtual friends, don't forget to announce your wedding on your favorite social networking sites after the ceremony.

Instructions

Prepare your announcement several weeks in advance of the wedding. If you are also sending invitations, have the announcements printed on the same paper as the invitations. Go ahead and address and stamp the envelopes before the wedding. Before leaving on your honeymoon, give the stack of completed announcements to a parent or close friend who will put the announcements in the mail the day after the wedding.

When you return from your honeymoon, submit an announcement to the newspaper. Include information about you and your wedding. Different newspapers have different requirements, so call the newspaper office or check the newspaper's website for details. Submit an announcement to the newspaper in the city where you live. Also consider submitting one to the newspaper in the town where you grew up, as well as the town where your parents live. Some newspapers provide this service free of charge. Others charge by the word, so check to see how much it will cost before writing a lengthy announcement.

Contact your college or high school alumni office. They often have an alumni magazine that will print your announcement.

For a more informal way to let friends know you have tied the knot, send them an email. You can also send out a notice on your favorite social networking site after the ceremony and include a photo.
