How to Prune a Chokecherry Tree

The Prunus Virginiana "Chokecherry" is a small, deciduous tree or large shrub that flowers in the late summer or early fall, and produces small, sour-tasting cherries after the flowers die off. They are also considered "ornamental" shrubs, and can greatly enhance the aesthetic value of the landscape. As with many types of ornamental shrubs, the Chokecherry tree should be trimmed back yearly to promote new growth and to remove any dead or diseased branches that might harm your shrub. Prune the Chokecherry tree immediately after it has finished blooming. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the Chokecherry shrub carefully to determine if there are any dead or diseased branches. These branches need to be pruned from the tree to keep the plant in good health.

    • 2

Prune away any dead or diseased branches. Dead branches should be cut off at the base, where they join the main stalk or trunk. Diseased branches should be cut off at least 6 inches beneath the infected area.

    • 3

Make thinning cuts on the tree as desired. When pruning away branches, make sure you make the cut about 1/4 inch above an outward-facing bud or young shoot. This will promote outer growth and will prevent the inner portion of the plant from getting cluttered with branches.

    • 4

Cut back any branches needed to shape the Chokecherry into the desired appearance. Again, make sure you cut above an outward-facing bud rather than an inward-facing bud.
