How to Estimate AdWords Traffic

Beyond publishing a website and following good SEO strategies, Google AdWords can make driving traffic to your site easier by displaying advertising for your site on the search engine. Site owners specify their targeted keywords using AdWords tools and create a custom text or display ad Google implements into search results related to your business or interest. The end result is a focus on the specific customers you want to attract to your website, with narrow demographics including location, language, device type and age-appropriate keyword ideas.

Instructions

    • 1

Point your Web browser to the Google AdWords Keyword Tool. Enter general keywords about your business or interest into the field titled "Word or phrase." Look for consistent keywords across your own website if you are unsure of what to enter.

    • 2

Click the check box which precedes the words "Only show ideas closely related to my search terms" to limit your search results. Select the "Advanced Options" menu to specify targeted locations, languages, age-appropriate keywords, device specifications or to add keyword filters, as desired. Click "Search" when complete.

    • 3

Scroll through your keyword results for choices with low competition based on the shaded area in the "Competition" column and higher global or local monthly searches. Select high competition keywords if you have a more flexible advertising budget, which is necessary to saturate placement in search results for those keywords. Make a list of your favorite keywords from the list, being aware there may be additional choices on the next page if your search yields more than 50 results.

    • 4

Click "Traffic Estimator" under "Tools," located on the left-hand side of the page. Enter your keywords in the field provided, hitting enter after each entry for multiple keywords. Select "Advanced Options" and specify specific locations and match types, as desired. Click "Estimate" to continue.

    • 5

Look for the column titled "Estimated Daily Clicks," which reports the estimated traffic to your website for the keywords and budget you specified. View the column titled "Estimated Daily Cost" for an estimate of your daily expenditures for participating in Google AdWords campaigns.

Tips & Warnings

  • Target your keyword's cost-per-click (CPC) bid on the lower end of any reported average, since click-through rate is virtually the same regardless of placement in search results. Look for a summary of the estimated CPC for each keyword in the Google AdWords Traffic Estimator, and bid accordingly.

  • Download keywords for quick referral by checking the box in the top, left-hand corner of search results, click "Download," and select "All" from the drop-down menu. Select your desired format, choosing from CSV for Excel, CSV, TSV, XML and GZipped CSV. Click "Download" to save the data to your computer.
