How to Wire a Trailer Break Away Switch

How to Wire a Trailer Break Away Switch thumbnail
Trailer breakaway switches signal the trailer's breaks to engage if it becomes detached from the vehicle.

Towing a trailer significantly reduces the breaking distance of the tow vehicle due to its weight. Electric trailer breaks minimize this problem by adding breaking power to the trailer's wheels. With the installation of a breakaway kit, the trailers breaks also are used to stop the trailer if it becomes detached from the tow vehicle. Such installation can prevent the dangers of trailers veering into oncoming traffic and minimize damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Run the black, white and blue wires from the breakaway control box to the trailer's tongue.

    • 2

Connect the black wire to the trailer harness' red wire with a scotch lock connector. These work by placing one wire in each slot and closing the gate. This forces a metal blade into each wire creating a connection.

    • 3

Connect the white wire from the breakaway box to the white wire on the trailer harness with a scotch lock connector.

    • 4

Connect the blue wire from the breakaway box to the blue wire on the breakaway switch with a scotch lock connector.

    • 5

Connect the other blue wire from the breakaway switch to the blue wire on the trailer's harness with a scotch lock connector.

    • 6

Wrap each connection in electrical tape and secure the loose wires with cable ties.
