Search engine algorithms are tricky. In order to get your image noticed by Google Images, you need to predict what the Google search engine spider (program that visits website to record what's there) will do, a task that that is comparable to an educated guess. The task involves following a few nomenclature steps. While these steps won't guarantee your image to be listed at the top of the search result, there's a better chance that it will get to the first or second page if you follow the steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Name your file according to what's in the picture. For example, if you have a picture of an elephant at a circus, you might name the image "elephant_circus".

    • 2

Navigate to Google AdWords to find out the best search terms for the file name of your image.

    • 3

Type the name of your image into Google AdWords.

    • 4

Choose the keywords with little "Competition" (bar graph filled in the least) and with most "Global Monthly Searches." For example, when you type in "circus elephant" the keywords that get the most hits with little competition are "circus elephants."

    • 5

Write a caption for the keyword. Use the Google AdWords you found from Step 4. For example, for the words "circus elephants," an optimized caption would read, "One of the circus elephants under the big top."

    • 6

Write descriptive text about the image near to where you place it on your website and blog.

    • 7

Add an "alt" tag to the html code of your image. If you're adding HTML code to a website or blog, have access to the code and want the circus elephants to be found by Google Images, add "alt= circus elephants" after the image code.

Tips & Warnings

  • Names of files should have no blank spaces in them; use underscores or dashes.

  • WordPress will create "alt" tags for you when you type in words in the "alternative text box" when you upload the image in the "Add media files from your computer" window.
