How to Boot From the HP Recovery Console

Recover from Windows failures by using the Recovery Partition on your hard disk.

Instead of shipping with a Windows installation DVD, HP computers store all files needed to repair or reinstall the operating system on a hidden hard disk. This partition contains HP's customized version of Windows. If your "live" installation of Windows has problems that prevent it from booting, you can boot into HP's Recovery Console. The Recovery Manager accesses the contents of the recovery partition as needed, and allows you to apply repairs to your Windows installation or to reinstall Windows from scratch.

Instructions

    • 1

Reboot your computer, or turn it on if it is turned off.

    • 2

Press "F11" repeatedly when the blue HP boot screen appears to be redirected to the Recovery Manager.

    • 3

Answer "No" to the question about whether to use Microsoft System Restore. Follow the prompts to repair or reinstall Windows, depending on the problem that made you go into recovery mode in the first place.
