How to Promote an Event on Facebook


In the past, those who wanted to put on a personal or professional event were forced to take out ads in the newspaper or make flyers. Facebook can streamline that process. Not only can using Facebook to promote an event save you money on printing costs or classified ad fees, it can help you reach more potential guests quicker than either of those methods. By creating an event, making it public and tweaking it for optimal promotion benefit, you can have more people showing up to your event than you ever thought possible.

  • Log in to your Facebook account. Click "Events."

  • Click "Create an Event." Type in the basic information about your event into the relevant boxes. Information used here includes the title of the event, the date of the event and a description of what's going on at the event.

  • Check the boxes next to "Anyone can view and RSVP (public event)" and "Show the guest list on the event page." Making the event public increases the event's exposure once it is posted online. Allowing everyone to see the guest list can also help promote the event; friends and colleagues are more likely to attend if they see their own friends and colleagues have already agreed to go.

  • Click "Create Event" when finished.

  • Click "Share" on the event page that appears. Type a brief message in the text box to promote the event. The catchier the tagline, the better. Click "On your own Wall" next to the "Share" option and click "Share Event" to broadcast the event to all the people in your Facebook network.

  • Repeat Step 5, but this time, click on "Share on a friend's Wall" next to the "Share" option. Pick a friend or group of friends you know who might be interested in the event or connected to others with similar interests. This is an especially useful way to promote your event if you are running an event for an organization and know professional contacts on Facebook within the industry or field. Click "Share Event" when finished.

  • Click "Edit Event" on the same page. Click "Add Event Photo" and then click on the button next to the "Select an Image" box to find a photo on your hard drive to advertise the event. For maximum promotion, upload an image file of a poster or notice promoting the event. Make sure the poster is eye-catching and prominently features the title and date of the event.

  • Allow those attending to bring guests. Specify in your event image or in the text description of the event that those attending may bring their friends, family or significant others. Not only will this make the event more attractive to potential attendants, it will also prompt guests to send the event link to others who they want to bring along, which increases your exposure when your event link appears on someone else's wall.

  • Post frequent Facebook status updates on your own profile as the event draws near. Include a link to the event page to make it easy for people to sign up. Frequent reminders will prompt users to put the event on their calendar and send the link to others, building a groundswell of word-of-mouth promotion.
