How to Set Up "TF2"

Team Fortress 2 is an online multiplayer game developed and published by Valve Software in October 2009. Players compete against one another in team-based multiplayer matches. They can choose between different classes such as the "Spy" or the "Heavy," each with different abilities, weapons and roles on the battlefield. As with many other PC games, before you play you need to set up the game. Setting up TF2 depends on both your own preferences as well as your system's configuration.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch "Steam." Click on "Library."

    • 2

Double-click "Team Fortress 2." Steam launches Team Fortress 2. Press "Esc" to skip the introductory videos.

    • 3

Click "Options." Assign any custom control keys in the "Keyboard" tab. Double-click the key listing under "KEY/BUTTON" and press your desired key to assign that key to a specific function in the game.

    • 4

Click "Advanced" at the bottom of the options window. Put check marks beside "Enable Developer Console" and "Fast Weapon Switch." The developer console allows you to enter more advanced commands into the game if you wish. "Fast Weapon Switch" causes your character to immediately switch to the weapon you select without first confirming that selection. Turn this function off if you find it does not complement your play style. Click "Apply."

    • 5

Click the "Mouse" tab. Move the slider to your desired mouse sensitivity setting. Moving it over to the right makes your mouse more sensitive, meaning your character aims faster. Moving it to the left makes your sensitivity lower, meaning your character aims more slowly. Some players like a high sensitivity while others enjoy a lower one. Increase or decrease the sensitivity as you please during game play to find your personal taste. Click "Apply."

    • 6

Click the "Audio" tab. Select the settings from the drop-down menus that best match your system's configuring and your preferences. You can also use the sliders to change overall game and music volume. Click "Apply."

    • 7

Click the "Video" tab. Select your desired video resolution. If the proper resolution is not listed, change the "Aspect Ratio" setting to the one that best represents your monitor and check the available resolutions again. If your computer is older, you may not be able to run the game at the highest available resolution. Click "Advanced." Adjust the video settings to more demanding ones if you have a newer, more powerful computer. Leave them at their default settings or lower them if the game runs at a low frame rate. Click "OK." Click "Apply."

    • 8

Click the "Voice" tab. Enable or disable your microphone according to your preference. Click "Test Microphone" and speak into your microphone if you wish to use voice communication. If your voice is too quiet, check the box beside "Boost Microphone Gain." Click "Apply."

    • 9

Click the "Multiplayer" tab. Customize your crosshair to your liking. You can also choose a "Spray." These are images you can place in the game by approaching a flat surface and pressing the key you assigned to this function. TF2 comes with a number of "Sprays" from which you can choose. Click "Apply."

Tips & Warnings

  • This setup procedure works with many games running on Valve's "Source" engine, such as "Day of Defeat: Source," "CounterStrike: Source" and the "Left4Dead" games.
