How to Type Fractions in Excel

If you want to display a fraction, in its original format, in Microsoft Excel then you must first use the number "0" at the start of your cell. When you type a number, a slash and then another number, Microsoft Excel automatically changes your number into a date. The date format is more popular than a written fraction, so Excel converts it automatically. While Excel will display a fraction using the "0" method, it also logs the number as a decimal. This means that you can still use it in other functions.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open Microsoft Excel.

    • 2

      Click on an empty cell.

    • 3

Type "0" then "SPACE" and the type your fraction in the "X/Y" format. For example, to write a half, type the following:

      0 1/2

    • 4

Press "Enter." "1/2" will be displayed in the cell.
