How to Think Outside the Box When Finding a Job

Skip searching the local newspaper when looking for a job.

In April 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 13.7 million Americans, or 9 percent of the population, were out of work and seeking a job. There are several traditional avenues, including visiting job-seeking websites and checking newspaper ads that for many are not as effective as they once were to find a job. There are several other out-of-the-box strategies that will offer new and exciting ways to get hired.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply for jobs in a different field. Do not become focused on one type of job or seeking employment through one company. Broaden your horizons to temporary employment that will work for the moment while you still search for your dream job.

    • 2

Use social networking sites, such as Twitter or Facebook, to find employment. Post that you are looking for work and ask if anyone is hiring or knows of any future job postings. This will give you the ability to contact all of your friends and family members at once about potential new jobs.

    • 3

Consider jobs with different types of pay. For instance if you were salaried in the past, consider a job that works on commission or offers a lower salary but supplements your income with bonuses. These more unconventional ways of being paid will open up more opportunities for employment.

    • 4

Send out resumes to several companies that are hiring in your area, and across the country. Mail out at least 100 resumes to companies that are both in and out of your field and that will require you to relocate. Widening your net will give you more opportunities than staying in your own backyard.

    • 5

Contact employees, supervisors or managers from your previous jobs that you left in good standing. Ask about any job openings in the company and apply for these.

    • 6

Post an ad in a local newspaper and make fliers to put into windows around your community. Provide an email address or phone number where you can be reached and ask people in your town or area to send you any job leads.
