Vonage allows customers to transfer an outside number to an existing account.

Vonage is a discount telecommunications provider through which worldwide broadband telephone service is available. There are two ways to transfer an existing phone number to your existing Vonage account. If you wish to keep both your Vonage and your outside numbers active, you may do so by adding a line. If you wish to replace your existing Vonage number with an outside number, you may so as well. There is an average ten-day wait period for either transfer process.

Instructions

  1. Add a Second Number

      Visit the Vonage "Number for Life" web page. Locate the "Tools to Help You Decide" box on the bottom right side of the page. Click the "Keep Existing Number" tab, which is the second option provided.

      Type your area code and telephone number into the boxes provided. Click the "Check Now" button. The system will inform you whether your phone number is transferable or not. If it is, move on to step 3. According to Vonage most landline and cellular telephone numbers are eligible for transfer. As long as a telephone number is based within the Vonage coverage area it should be transferable.

      Click the "Find a Plan" button to view your plan options. Select the plan that suits your needs and create a new account for your transferred number. Each Vonage number has its own account. You will now have two accounts; one for each number.

      Complete the online account application form and number transfer request form.

    Replace Existing Vonage Number

      Visit the Vonage "Number for Life" web page. Locate the "Tools to Help You Decide" box on the bottom right side of the page. Click the "Keep Existing Number" tab, which is the second option provided.

      Type your area code and telephone number into the boxes provided. Click the "Check Now" button. The system will inform you whether your phone number is transferable or not. If it is, move on to step 3. According to Vonage most landline and cellular telephone numbers are eligible for transfer. As long as a telephone number is based within the Vonage coverage area it should be transferable.

      Contact Vonage Customer Care at 1-VONAGE-HELP (1-866-243-4357). Explain that you wish to transfer an outside number to your existing Vonage account, so that it replaces your current Vonage telephone number. The Vonage representative will guide you through the process of opening a second Vonage account for the newly transferred number. Your original Vonage number will remain active during the ten-day transfer period. At the end of the waiting period, your old number and the account associated with it will be canceled. Your new account associated with the transferred number will remain open and take the place of your old account without any extra fees or changes in billing. This process is not available online.

Tips & Warnings

  • To check if your geographical area is covered by Vonage telephone service visit the Vonage "Area Code Selection" page.

  • Not all numbers are eligible to be transferred to a Vonage account. Make sure your number can be moved before canceling your existing service.
