How to FTP a Folder in HostGator

HostGator provides web hosting services to businesses and individuals. Purchasing a web hosting package will gain you access to a web host server that you can access to update your website and services. For you to access and update your website on the HostGator FTP server, you'll need to configure and use the services of an FTP client. Windows Explorer, FileZilla and SmartFTP are some FTP programs you can use to transfer your files and folders on HostGator.

Instructions

  1. Windows Explorer

      Right-click "Start" and click "Explore" to open Windows Explorer.

      Enter "ftp: //yourHostGatorftpaddress/" in the address bar on the top left of Windows Explorer, replace the dummy address with your actual HostGator FTP address and press "Enter." The "Log on as" security box appears.

      Enter your FTP username and password and then click "Log On." You should have access to your FTP files and folders on HostGator's FTP server. Windows Explorer will display the remote files on the right pane of the Explorer window. Locate the folder you want on the left pane on your computer. Drag the folder and drop it in the right pane to upload it to HostGator's FTP server.

    SmartFTP

      Open your Web browser and navigate to SmartFTP (see Resources).

      Click to download the SmartFTP client. Click "Run" on the file download box to install the client. Follow the instructions.

      Open up SmartFTP client and click "File" and "New Remote Browser." The new remote browser window opens.

      Select "Normal" for the "Protocol" drop-down box.

      Enter your HostGator FTP server name, folder path, user name and password. Click "OK." SmartFTP will connect to your remote FTP server. You now have access to your remote HostGator FTP files and folders on the right side and your local computer files and folders on the left side of the SmartFTP client. Drag the folder from your computer in the left pane and drop it in the right pane of the SmartFTP window to upload a folder to HostGator.

    FileZilla

      Open your Web browser and go to FileZilla (see Resources). Download the FileZilla FTP client. Select "win32-setup.exe" and click "Run" to install FileZilla. Follow the on-screen instructions to install FileZilla on your computer. Go to "Start" and click to open the FileZilla FTP client.

      Click "File" and "Site Manager." The "Site Manager" window opens.

      Click on the "New Site" button and give the new site a name. On the right pane of FileZilla, type your HostGator FTP server information under the "General" tab.

      Click "File" and "Site Manager," select your FTP server and click on the "Connect" button. You now have access to your remote HostGator FTP files and folders on the right side and your local computer files and folders on the left side of the FileZilla FTP client. Drag the folder from your computer in the left pane and drop it in the right pane of the FileZilla window to upload a folder to HostGator.
