In the United States, earning a high school diploma is considered a rite of passage. A completed high school education is a requirement for most jobs, and it is also a prerequisite for admittance to college. For adults who dropped out of school before obtaining their diploma, or for high school students who prefer to learn independently, there is a way to earn a high school diploma online.

Research your options. There are several online school programs that offer diplomas (see the Resources section for links to some directories). Some of the programs require a few months of study, while others require you to only pass one test to receive your diploma. Determine which method is best for you.

Online home school programs, such as greatlakesacademy.com, offer a full high school program for a monthly fee ($150, as of 2011) along with the diploma exam and diploma. The final cost depends on how many courses you need to take before you receive your diploma.

Consider an online GED/Diploma Program. A GED/Diploma program allows you to sit for the GED test without attending additional courses and are offered through programs such as the John Adams Virtual School (johnadams-edu.us). The cost for a GED program ranges from $299 to $499, as of 2011.
