Use FileZilla to upload files to your HostGator account with an FTP connection.

Use FileZilla to upload files to your HostGator Web hosting account. FileZilla is an FTP client, or program, that allows your computer to connect to HostGator's servers. Once you're connected, you can upload all your website files directly from your computer to your account on the server. When you signed up with HostGator, you received a welcome email with your login information. You'll need that information to set up your connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your HostGator welcome email and note your host name and user name. You'll also need the account password you established.

    • 2

Launch FileZilla. If you don't have the program yet, download it for free from the FileZilla website. Once downloaded, double-click the installation file and follow the brief installation wizard. Double-click the FileZilla icon to launch the program.

    • 3

Open "File," then "Site Manager..." or click "Ctrl" and "S" to open the Site Manager dialog box.

    • 4

Click "New Site" from the dialog box and type in a name for your connection. Any name will do.

    • 5

Go to the "Host" box and type in the host name from your welcome email.

    • 6

Select "Normal" from the drop-down box next to "Logontype" and make sure "Servertype" is "FTP File Transfer Protocol."

    • 7

Enter the user name and password for your account and click "Connect."

    • 8

Wait for the connection to complete. You'll see your HostGator server files on the right and your computer files on the left.

    • 9

Navigate to the files you want to upload in the left window pane. These could be Web pages, images or any other files you want to upload.

    • 10

Click and drag the files from the left window pane to the right pane. Drop the files into folders on the server side if necessary, depending on your site's architecture. Once the files are copied to the HostGator server, they're live on your website.
