How to Go Brunette at Home
You can change your hair color with a kit you purchase from the store. It takes about an hour and can be done at home. Going darker, like from blonde to brunette, is easier than lightening your hair. If you're a red-head going for the brunette look, keep in mind that some red shades might still appear in your hair. Subtle changes are easiest to do at home so try a tone that is close to your current hair color. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Buy a hair dye package, which is available at drug stores, grocery stores and big-box retailers. Choose a brunette shade you like, keeping in mind that subtle changes are easier to accomplish at home.
-
2
Put on the plastic gloves that came with the dye package. Mix the solution according to the box directions. Some will instruct you to shake the container or to add color formula first. Place a towel around your shoulders to protect your clothing as dye on clothing will stain.

3
Squeeze some of the solution onto your hair, starting at the top and working down. Part your hair in several sections and saturate every piece of your hair with the dye.
-
4
Place all of your hair in a pile on top of your head. Cover with a plastic cap if it is included in the kit and watch the time.
-
5
Rinse your hair under a faucet after the time indicated in the package instructions has elapsed. Rinse until the water runs clear.
-
6
Apply a deep conditioner to your hair. Many home kits come with this product, which prevents your hair from drying caused by the dye. Dry with a towel.

Tips & Warnings
Read all of the instructions on the box you pick. The instructions can vary by brand and type. Follow those instructions exactly. Many boxes recommend starting with a test strip of hair to see how the dye reacts on your hair.
Wait at least two weeks to reapply hair dye, even if you are not completely happy with results, to avoid hair damage.
