Instructions

    • 1

Invest in a quality fitted hairpiece -- as unfitted hairpieces often look unnatural and cheap. Nice toupees for men and women can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand, depending on the materials used and the size of the hairpiece. Ordering a toupee online or from a catalog may be cheaper, but it will most likely not fit your head or suit your hair color.

    • 2

Custom-fit your hairpiece. Have the toupee fitted by a professional. They will note the shape of your head, measure the area that you wish to cover and match your hair color. They will also work with your cut, style and length preferences.

    • 3

Purchase an adhesive. Hairpiece tape and liquid adhesives are both easy to use and good products, although liquid adhesive may be cheaper. Be sure to purchase a corresponding solvent, if you opt for the liquid adhesive.

    • 4

Groom your hairpiece, so that it appears natural on your head. Confidence is key when wearing a toupee and sporting the right style can help you achieve it.

    • 5

Wash your head and dry it thoroughly. Adhesives will stick better and longer to clean, dry skin.

    • 6

Apply the adhesive to the interior matting of the toupee, making sure that no excess tape or glue is showing from the sides: Then carefully lay it on your head. After it's applied, examine every inch of the hairpiece to make sure it is properly attached and the interior mat is smoothed out, to get the most natural look.

    • 7

To remove the toupee, find the place where the matting is attached to your head, and carefully pull it up -- beginning with the edges. Never remove your toupee by grasping the hair.

    • 8

Wash and store your toupee, according to directions. Toupees can either be kept in protective cases or laid on top of a round head-shaped surface to help maintain its shape.
