How to Smooth Sculpey
Sculpey clay can be baked in an oven, rather than a kiln, to be cured. This feature makes the clay a feasible option for creative home crafters who do not have access to large art studio equipment. Another benefit of using polymer clay, namely Sculpey, is that the surface of the clay can be smoothed prior to the curing process. Smooth the clay properly to remove the need for sanding and flaw correction after baking the finished piece.

1
Inspect your finished piece to determine which areas of the clay need to be smoothed.
-
2
Scrape gently across the rough areas of clay to scrape back a thin layer, revealing a smoother texture. To navigate and smooth curves or other odd shapes that will be compromised by the straight edge of the tool, use the curved edges and work slowly to keep your original design intact.

Wrap a paper towel around the tip of your finger and dampen it with a few drops of water.
-
4
Run your covered fingertip over any remaining rough spots or scrape marks to gently rub the surface into a smoother texture.
