How to Prepare an Individual for a Prayer of Deliverance

How to Prepare an Individual for a Prayer of Deliverance thumbnail
A prayer for deliverance entreats God to deliver someone form the forces of evil.

The traditional understanding of a prayer of deliverance is that it is a holy speech which asks the Lord to deliver or save a person from the influence or control of an evil entity, such as a demonic force or a supernatural being. For example, in the Roman Catholic religion, a prayer of deliverance is part of a larger ritual called an exorcism where a priest delivers individuals from demonic possession. Preparing an individual for a prayer of deliverance might be a simple process if the individual is seeking help. It might be more complex if the individual is truly suffering from demonic possession and resistant to such efforts.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle the surroundings of the individual who requires deliverance with holy water. Make the sign of the cross after the holy water touches each item or area of the house.

    • 2

Place the individual in question in an area where he can lie down or sit in a spot where he's upright yet comfortable and within in the reach of the person or people who will be praying for him. If a prayer group will be offering the prayer of deliverance, he just needs to be in a spot where they can all lay their hands on him. If a priest will be offering the prayer of deliverance as part of an exorcism, the person should be laying down, ideally on a mattress or other area where he can't hurt himself. In such a case, restraints may be needed or you might need extra people on hand to hold this person down.

    • 3

Remove distracting or immoral items from the room such as drug paraphernalia, pornography or comparable items. Alternatively, if the person is possessed, remove items that he could use to hurt himself or others such as sharp or blunt objects.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have a crucifix on hand.

  • Only priests who are legally ordained and thoroughly trained in prayers of deliverance and exorcisms should perform them.
