A dirty connection between the video card slot on the motherboard and the video card can interfere with graphic display.

Computer components often end up with built-up dust and other material from the environment. This can interfere with the function of the components by blocking their fans and by interfering with the connection between the card and the motherboard. This is particularly important on a video card as overheating is a common problem that leads to the destruction of the video card. Furthermore, a weak connection between the video card and the motherboard can interfere with proper display of graphics.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Can of compressed air
  • Small vacuum with a bag

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the side of the computer case opposite from the motherboard. The case siding will typically be held on by two Phillips head screws. If you do not know which side the motherboard is on, look at the back of the computer. The connections to external components will all be on one side. That is the side with the motherboard.

    • 2

Identify the graphics card and remove it. Most modern graphics cards are plugged directly into a PCI-ex connector, which requires holding down a plastic piece on one end while pulling up on the video card to remove it.

    • 3

Clean the PCI-ex slot by blowing into it with the compressed air. Follow this by using the vacuum to remove any dust that may be in the vicinity.

    • 4

Clean the connectors on the bottom of the video card in the same manner. Spray it with compressed air and run the vacuum over the connectors.

    • 5

Spray the compressed air into the fan on the video card to remove any dust. The fan should move as you spray it. Vacuum out the fan as well.

    • 6

Replace the video card and the case side.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your video card is equipped with a fan, take extra care to be sure that the fan is cleaned. This ensures the card will stay within operational temperature, extending the life of the graphics card.

  • When working inside a computer, it is possible to damage components with static electricity on your body. For this reason, it is good practice to use an anti-static wrist strap or release any static electricity on your body by touching a grounded metal object.
