Instructions

    • 1

Lay the watermelon on a flat surface and use a serrated knife to cut a 1/4-inch thin slice off of one side of the watermelon. This slice will be the bottom of the boat and should be level so the boat sits evenly on a flat surface. Set the boat on the flat side and let it remain in this position during the carving.

    • 2

Measure 1 1/2 to 2 inches down from the top of the watermelon, which is the opposite side from the flat bottom, and cut horizontally around the melon. This will be lifted off of the melon so be sure to make the cut evenly. Pull the top off of the melon and set aside.

    • 3

Scoop out the inside of the melon boat, and the top of the melon, using a melon baller. Save the melon in a large bowl to place back into the boat once it is finished. When scooping, leave a thin layer of melon along the interior of the rind.

    • 4

Cut the edge, along the rind, of the melon into a saw-tooth pattern using a paring knife or small, sharp knife. The saw-tooth pattern will go around the entire perimeter of the melon.

    • 5

Cut cantaloupe and honeydew and remove the seeds. Use the melon baller to scoop the melon and mix with the watermelon balls. Add strawberries, blueberries and raspberries and fill the watermelon ball with the fruit.

    • 6

Wrap the watermelon boat with plastic wrap until it is ready to be eaten. Discard or compost all fruit remains.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use shaped cookie cutters, such as a star, to create a pattern along the rind instead of the traditional saw-tooth pattern.
