How to Cut Crime
Crime prevention is essential to cutting crime rates in your community. Increased police presence and government-led initiatives are effective, but largely out of the hands of individuals. However, while these types of decisions may be out of your hands, there are a number of steps you can take to cut crime rates in your community. Educating children, increasing citizen vigilance and taking other preventative measures will help curb crime and keep your neighborhood and community safe.

1
Educate yourself. Websites such as the National Crime Prevention Council (www.ncpc.org) have information and resources to help you prevent crime. Visit your local community center and get to know people in your neighborhood. They can tell you about situations unique to your community.
-
2
Lobby your local congressperson for political change. Think about what you want changed in your community or petition for more funds for community initiatives and tell your representative. Call (866) 219-4466 to find out how to contact a representative in your area.

Join the neighborhood watch, or start one if it doesn't already exist. A neighborhood watch is a community group that keeps an eye out for crime in a neighborhood. They sometimes also organize events such as graffiti clean-ups or night patrols. Create a phone list for everyone. After calling the police, agree to call each other if you witness any crimes.

4
Educate children in your neighborhood. Preventing children and teenagers from entering crime is key to cutting crime rates in your neighborhood. Join a program in which you mentor at-risk children such as Big Brothers Big Sisters. Contact local schools and try to get involved in crime prevention initiatives.

5
Hire at-risk youth and young adults. If you are a business owner, ensuring that young individuals have a profitable alternative to crime helps keep communities safe.
