How to Render a Grid in GIMP thumbnail
Find out how to add grid lines to your images with GIMP.

Grid lines can be used to make and compare measurements in an image. Grid lines can also be used as an artistic effect, as they are great for accenting straight lines and 90 degree angles in photos. And if you'd like to apply grids to your images, you can use a copy of GIMP, a free image editor, to render grid lines to your exact specifications.

Instructions

    • 1

Start GIMP. Click on GIMP's "File" heading, and then select "Open" to import your image into the program.

    • 2

Click "Filters," then highlight "Render." Next, highlight "Pattern." Click on the "Grid" option in the "Pattern" menu. The "Grid" menu will appear, providing you with a preview of your grid and configuration settings.

    • 3

Use the "Up" and "Down" arrow buttons by the "Width" heading to increase or decrease the thickness of your grid lines. Use the arrow buttons outside of the "Spacing" field to change the amount of space between your grid lines.

    • 4

Use "Offset" arrow buttons to shift your grid diagonally. You can move the grid towards the top left or bottom right corner.

    • 5

Click on the color boxes at the bottom "Grid" menu to select a new color for your grid line. Select a new color from the color palette that appears.

    • 6

Click "OK" in the "Grid" menu to apply your grid lines and exit the menu. Select the "Save" option from GIMP's "File" menu to save the changes to your image.
