1
Place your base layer on a plate or cake board. Center a cardboard cake circle, which you will use to support the top cake layer on the base layer. Press down lightly to form an impression. Remove and set it aside for later.
-
2
Push a dowel into the base cake layer within the boundaries of the cardboard cake circle impression. Make a mark with a pen or marker on the dowel just below the cake's surface.

-
3
Remove the dowel and cut it at the mark you just made. Use this dowel as a guideline to cut more dowels of the same size. You should have a total of four to six dowels.
-
4
Place the dowel rods in the base tier. Make sure they are spaced evenly so that they will properly support the upper tier.
-
5
Punch a hole in the center of the cake board using a sharpened dowel. Place the upper tier on the cake board.
-
6
Center the top tier on the base tier. Use the impression you made earlier to guide you.
-
7
Push a longer dowel rod through both layers of the cake, all the way through to the cake plate. Make sure it is the same height or shorter than the cake so that it cannot be seen.
