If you need to connect two or more computers together to form a network, using an Ethernet hub is one of the options is available. You can connect each computer to the hub using an Ethernet cable, which runs between the computer's network card and a port on the hub. The Ethernet hub broadcasts network traffic received on each of its ports to all of the other ports, allowing each computer to connect to any other computer attached to the hub. Ethernet hubs are simple to setup, as connecting a computer is as simple as plugging in an Ethernet cable.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the Ethernet hub on a flat surface, ensuring there is adequate clear space around the hub for ventilation.

    • 2

Plug the hub's power supply into an electrical outlet, then plug the other end into the power socket on the hub.

    • 3

Set the "Uplink" button on your hub to the "Normal" position, unless you are connecting the hub to another hub. In normal mode, connect a computer to the last port on the hub to use as a normal network port. In uplink mode, connect another hub to the last port on the hub to connect the computers on the two hubs together.

    • 4

Connect each computer to the hub using a straight-through CAT 5 Ethernet cable. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the network socket on the computer's network interface, and the other end into a free port on the hub.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider using an Ethernet switch instead of a hub. Switches allow you to connect a number of computers together, but are much more efficient as each computer only receives data matching its unique address. This cuts down on network bandwidth and stops packet collisions, giving better performance.

  • Ethernet cables must be under 328 feet or 100 meters in length to comply with Ethernet specifications.

  • Do not chain more than two Ethernet hubs together.
