How to Disable Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-malware program created by Microsoft. The program features real-time protection, which helps prevent malicious programs from infecting your computer. Moreover, you can use the program to scan your computer and remove malicious programs that have already infected your computer. Running Microsoft Security Essentials may slow your computer and prevent other programs from running properly, such as games and other anti-malware programs. Thus, you may want to disable Microsoft Security Essentials. Note that you can disable real-time protection or the entire program.

Disable Real-Time Protection

  • Click "Start," "All Programs" and "Microsoft Security Essentials" to open Microsoft Security Essentials.

  • Click the "Settings" tab.

  • Click "Real-Time Protection" in the left pane.

  • Uncheck the box next to "Turn On Real-Time Protection (Recommended)," and click "Save."

  • Close "Microsoft Security Essentials." Microsoft Security Essentials real-time protection is now disabled.
