How to Replace a Lost Title in Dallas,Texas at the DMV
In Texas, like other states, a vehicle title is a record of who owns a car or truck. To sell or transfer the vehicle to someone else requires that you have title, since you would have to sign the rights of the title over to the buyer. If you can't find the title to your vehicle and live in Dallas, Texas, replace it by mail or in person at the regional office of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
Things You'll Need
- Government photo ID
- 1 Letter-size envelope
- 1 First-Class postage stamp
- Signed permission letter from your financing company (if applicable)
- Business card of the person who signed the permission letter (if applicable)
- Government photo ID of signer of Power of Attorney (if applicable)

Make a copy of your government issued photo ID such as your driver's license.

Complete the Title Application form available for download from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website (see Resources.)

Address the envelope to the Dallas Regional Office, located in Carrollton, Texas. The office's mailing address is the same as its physical address and available on the department of motor vehicles website. Attach a First-Class postage stamp to the front of the envelope (see Location).

Enclose in the envelope a completed Title Application, the copy of your photo ID, documents from your finance company (if applicable), Power of Attorney documents (if applicable) as well as payment of the mail-processing fee. At the time of publication, the fee was $2 and is payable by check, cashier's check or money order to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Cash is not accepted by mail.

Seal the envelope and mail it at the nearest U.S. Post Office or mailbox. Allow up to 20 business days or one month for processing of your application. If you or your finance company (if applicable) have not received a response from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles within 20 business days, call the regional office at (512) 465-7611 to find out why.

Complete the Title Application available on the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website.

Go to the Dallas Regional Office, located in Carrollton, Texas. The Dallas Regional Office is accessible by car in about 30 minutes from downtown Dallas, or by train and bus, approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes from downtown Dallas.

Present the Title Application, the signed permission letter and business card from your finance company, documents related to your Power of Attorney, if application and payment for a processing fee to a Department of Motor Vehicles clerk. The in-person processing fee is $5.45 at the time of publication and is payable by check, cash or money order to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Debit and credit cards are not accepted. If you own your vehicle, the clerk will issue you a copy of your title. If your finance company owns the vehicle, the company will be mailed a copy of your title.

Tips & Warnings
If you do not own your car and you make monthly loan payments to a bank or financing company, an employee of the financing company must fill out the Certified Copy of Title application. Present to the DMV a signed letter from the company stating that you have permission to get another copy of the title as well as the business card of the person who signed the letter. If the application is being signed by a Power of Attorney, you must present a government issued photo ID of the person who signed the Power of Attorney and the government issued photo ID of the person signing the application
Wait at least 30 calendar days before applying for another title for that same vehicle.
