Gather the information you have about the applicant so you can include as much detailed information as possible. If you were the teacher, compile the work the student completed while studying with you. Know the achievements of the student, with dates, so you can include these items in the letter.

Begin the letter by addressing the contact person with a formal salutation.

State the purpose of the letter by writing your formal recommendation in the first sentence. Provide details about how you know the applicant and how long you have known the applicant.

Provide relevant details about your experiences with the applicant. For example, if you taught the applicant, give details about the classes you taught. Include positive and specific information about the applicant's performance and activities.

Conclude the letter with a strong paragraph that highlights the applicant's activities with positive attributes that make the applicant a wise choice. For example, if the applicant was an enthusiastic and imaginative student who worked hard to excel in your class, write that you expect the applicant to continue to excel in all endeavors. If the applicant put forth extra effort and work that exceeded expectations, write that you anticipate that the applicant will continue to exceed any basic requirements. Write a final sentence that states your highest recommendation for the applicant.

Close the letter with "Sincerely" and sign your name. Add your professional title beneath your name.
