GIMP Smoke Tutorial
GIMP is a freeware graphics program that many small businesses and individuals choose over expensive commercial products. It has many of the same tools and features as the commercial products and can be used for an array of projects and tasks. For example, if you have a photo you would like to add a cloud or line of smoke to, you can easily do this using GIMP.

Open GIMP. Select "File" from the menu, and choose "Open." In the dialog that appears, locate and open the photo you would like to edit.

Go to the layers panel, and click on the "New Layer" button. Change the foreground color at the bottom of the toolbar to the color you want for your smoke. A light gray works well for standard smoke.

Select the brush tool, and choose a fuzzy brush tip. Click on the "New Layer" button at the bottom of the layers panel, and use the brush tool to paint in the smoke where you want it on the photo.

Select "Filter" from the menu, and choose "Distort." From the options, choose "Whirl and Pinch." In the dialog that appears, adjust the angle, amount and radius sliders until you like the preview. Save your work.
