How to Fix Low FPS in "Team Fortress 2"
"Team Fortress 2" is a fast-paced, online first-person shooter that features an unconventional, cartoonish art style that can take its toll on older machines. Larger, more-detailed levels and servers with high player counts can lower your frames per second (FPS) to annoying, and even unplayable, numbers. FPS refers to the frame rate the game at which the game is running. Generally, the higher the frame rate, the smoother the performance. Having a low or sporadic FPS can put you at a disadvantage against players with higher and stable frame rates.

Verify that your computer meets the system requirements to run the game. Although you can technically play the game with the minimum specifications, the game won't look good and the performance will not be great. For "Team Fortress 2" (and PC games in general), it's best to go by the recommended specifications as they are usually more realistic in terms of performance.

Upgrade the drivers for your graphics card. Driver updates often include performance enhancements, bug fixes and optimization for select games. Get the most recent driver for your graphics card at the manufacturer's website (such as NVIDIA.com or AMD.com).

Lower the visual settings in the menu. Start "Team Fortress 2" and click Options on the main menu. Click Video. Set the resolution to the middle resolution setting supported by your monitor. The larger the monitor you use (or the higher the resolution you use), the more powerful graphics card you'll need to keep up performance. Widescreen monitor users can get by using only a portion of the monitor.

Click the Advance Settings tab. Here you will see all the advanced graphical options (such as texture detail, anti-aliasing and motion blur) available in the game. Set all graphical options to Low or Disable. This will make the game incredibly ugly, but you will notice a substantial increase in FPS. If you're happy with the FPS, you can gradually change settings to Medium or Enabled one at a time to find a balance between good FPS and graphics quality.
