How to Turn Off the File Manager in Ubuntu

A file manager is a software application that allows you to explore the contents of files and folders stored on devices connected to the computer. The file manager also offers commands to create, remove, move and copy multiple files at a time. The Ubuntu distribution of the Linux operating system ships with the Nautilus file manager. Ubuntu invokes Nautilus automatically for many operations, such as when a flash drive gets connected to the computer. You can turn off Nautilus if desired on your Ubuntu computer.

Instructions

    • 1

      Log in to the computer.

    • 2

Click "Applications" on the taskbar at the top of the graphical desktop, select "Accessories" and then "Terminal." Click on the Terminal window to open it.

    • 3

Type the following command into the terminal:

      sudo apt-get remove nautilus

Press "Enter." Ubuntu will prompt you for your password; enter it, then press "Enter." When the execution of "sudo apt-get" completes and the Terminal prompts you for the next command, the Ubuntu file manager will no longer be usable on your computer.
