Have the right technology. Most home-based jobs require use of a Desktop PC or laptop, broadband Internet connection, separate land line phone service, email account, instant message, printer and quiet work space. Be sure to have these tools before searching for a home-based position.

Start in your own backyard of Utah. Review the newspaper, job boards and staffing agencies for local companies that are known to be telecommuting friendly. Two major companies based in Utah that hire home-based call-center and customer-service agents are Jet Blue Airways and 1-800-Contacts. Visit the two company websites (see Resources) and click on the "Careers" or "Work for Us" link for a list of open positions. Input "work from home" or "telecommuting" in the search box. Submit a resume by mail or fax to the HR department for any current or future telecommuting openings.

Search major job boards and Internet databases for work at home-job listings. These sites include Monster, Career Builder and Simply Hired (see Resources). Search the job boards by inputting popular home-based keywords including: "freelance," "telecommute," "work from home," and "work at home." Complete another search utilizing the type of work you are interested in, such as sales, customer service or design for additional telecommuting opportunities.

Visit the Utah Craigslist website for freelance positions and other work-at-home jobs. Enter the same popular keywords as above into the search box on the front page of the website. Craigslist offers new jobs daily, so be sure to search the site for new opportunities.

Review popular career websites that provide free lists of work at home jobs for visitors. Rat Race Rebellion, Work at Home Mom and Work at Home Careers offer a wealth of resources. These sites complete a lot of the research and post jobs on a daily and weekly basis. Visitors can find jobs in writing, education, customer service, sales and transcription fields.

Tips & Warnings
Review all job listings carefully.
A legitimate job will not ask you to pay money up front for training or application-processing.
Avoid jobs that require fees up front unless for a background check.
Jobs that promise lots of money or unusual amounts of money, with no experience are scams.
