How to Draw a Gangster Character

Draw characters from walks of life that spark imagination. Gangsters come from a world that few people have the chance to experience. Expensive suits and guns are associated with the public's fanciful idea of a gangster's appearance. Use well-established visual cues to instantly let your audience know what your drawing depicts. Start with techniques similar to those used in figure drawing before you add clothing and props that make your character fill out the gangster role.

Instructions

  1. Creating your gangster

    • 1

Sketch a simple stick figure to capture the pose of your gangster character. Use ovals as a guide for the head and chest.

    • 2

Add a horizontal guide line for the eyes in the center of the head.

    • 3

Draw in the eyes and face. Make the mouth frown or sneer to capture the emotion of your gangster.

    • 4

Flesh out your sketch by adding a 20s-style hat and a long trench coat. Draw your thug in a slick suit.

    • 5

Refine your character by drawing a tommy gun in his hand. Add a cigar hanging out of your gangster's mouth. Add some background. Date and sign your sketch. Share with family and friends.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look at pictures of people in the 20s for clothing ideas.

  • Refrain from racially stereotyping your gangster character.
