How to Disable a WordPress Tag

WordPress gives you the ability to assign tags to a post using keywords and keyword phrases that are relevant to the post's content. You create these tags using the words and phrases of your choice, and visitors to your website use the tags to quickly locate the content that interests them. Over time, you may find that a WordPress website has hundreds of different tags. Scanning your website's tags, you may find that some are no longer relevant or are otherwise incorrect -- perhaps because you misspelled them. Using the WordPress Tags menu, you can disable a tag that you no longer intend to use by removing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the dashboard page for your WordPress website. Enter the user name "admin" and supply your password to log in.

    • 2

Expand the "Posts" menu in the upper-left corner of the page, and then click "Post Tags." This menu displays a complete list of the tags that you have created for your WordPress website.

    • 3

Click the "Search Tags" field in the upper-right corner of the page if the tag list is too long to fit in a single page. Type the name of the tag that you want to disable, and press "Enter" to display it on the right side.

    • 4

Hover the mouse pointer over the tag that you want to disable, and click the "Delete" link.

    • 5

      Click "OK."
