How to Move From iPhoto to Aperture 3
In the Apple OS X operating system, you can use either iPhoto to manage your photos, or step up to an application with more depth by using Aperture 3. Designed for the professional photographer, Aperture 3 allows the user to make drastic changes to his images, and gives him a wide variety of customization options. To make the transition from iPhoto to Aperture 3, you first need to import your iPhoto images over to Aperture 3, which takes just a few minutes to do.

Open up Aperture 3 by either clicking on the Aperture 3 icon in the dock, or by navigating to the Applications folder and then double-clicking on "Aperture 3." Wait for Aperture 3 to open up.

Click on the "File" label in the top-left corner of the screen. Select "Import" and then "iPhoto Library."

Look at the dialog box on the screen to determine how you want to import your images.

Select "In the Aperture Library" to import your master files from iPhoto into Aperture 3. Select "In Their Current Location" to import your iPhoto library as referenced files, this way your iPhoto library is kept intact. Select "Pictures" from the "Store Files" pop-up menu to store the imported master files as referenced images in the "Pictures" folder on your hard drive. Select "Choose" to store the imported master files as reference files in any location, other than the "Pictures" folder. Navigate to the folder you want to store your images.

Select either "Move Files" to move the files to the new location, or "Copy files" to copy the files to a new location.

Select how you want to name the imported files by clicking on the "Version Name" pop-up menu and typing in your preferred naming method.

Click on the "Import" icon to import the iPhoto library into Aperture 3.
