How to Cancel American Express Gift Card Payments

Report your American Express gift card lost or stolen immediately to stop fraudulent charges.

American Express gifts cards are available for purchase at convenience stores, department stores and pharmacies all over the country; the card can be used everywhere American Express is accepted. If you have an American Express gift card and you want to cancel a payment on the card, you must contact American Express. Canceled payments only are permitted if your card is lost or stolen and reported immediately.

Instructions

1. Call American Express at 877-297-4438 if your gift card is stolen, lost or has been used without your consent. You must be able to provide the information on the gift card, such as the card number and the four digit CSC number on the card.

2. Follow the automated prompts until you reach an American Express customer service representative.

3. Explain to the representative that your gift card was stolen and provide the card number and CSC number. The customer service representative will check the balance of your card and mail you a new card in the amount of your available balance. If there are fraudulent charges on the account, American Express will cancel them on your behalf.
