How to Test Latex Paints

How to Test Latex Paints thumbnail
A simple test helps you determine the type of paint on a surface.

There are two general types of paints: latex and alkyd. While latex paints use water as a thinner, alkyd paints use a solvent thinner. Latex paints are generally healthier because they release less volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which can cause air pollution and irritate the respiratory system. You can easily paint over latex paints, but you need a primer to paint a latex paint over an alkyd paint. Before painting, you should test whether the paint that is already on the surface is latex or alkyd paint. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a special paint test kit from a paint store or a home improvement store. Alternatively, you can get a gas line anti-freeze that contains methyl hydrate or a non-acetone-based nail polish remover.

    • 2

Dampen a rag or paper napkin with a small quantity of the test liquid.

    • 3

Rub the painted surface vigorously using the dampened rag or paper napkin. If the paint rubs off onto the rag or napkin, it is latex paint. If it remains shiny, it is alkyd paint.
