How to Submit Content on Reddit

Save

While browsing Reddit is a great way to kill a few hours by reading and commenting on links and text posts on topics such as politics, entertainment and even pitchforks, you may want to go one step further and start contributing content to the site. You can post a link to a Web page or a post text -- a mini article you wrote yourself -- by clicking on buttons featured on the front page of any subreddit.

Submitting external links allows you to get karma points based on the number of votes your submission receives.

Step 1

Log in to Reddit and select the subreddit you want to post your external link to. Be careful to choose a subreddit that is relevant to the topic of the link you want to post. Click on the "Submit a new link" button on the subreddit's front page to start the link submission process.

Step 2

Type a title for your post and copy and paste the address of your link in the "url" field. Optionally, you can click on the "Suggest title" button for Reddit to automatically fetch the title of the linked page and use it as the title of your post. If you decide to use this option, you might end up with a bland title or even no title at all. In most cases, to ensure your link gets read by a maximum of Redditors -- the official name for Reddit users -- you should try to come up with your own, attention-grabbing title.

Step 3

Click on the "Submit" button to submit your new text link. Optionally, you can choose not to receive replies to your post in your Reddit inbox if you prefer not to receive notifications after each reply.

Visit the most relevant subreddit and click on the "Submit a new text post" button on the front page.

Step 2

Choose a title for your new text post and, optionally, enter the body of your post in the "Text" field. While that field is optional, in most cases it is advisable to type something there. While it is true that some subreddits do allow posts that consist of only a question or statement -- such as "Boxers or briefs?" or "The Matrix is overrated!" -- most others specifically prohibit such posts. So you should try to come up with at least a few lines that expand on your topic.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can download toolbar addons for your browser such as [Reddit Companion for Chrome](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/reddit-companion/algjnflpgoopkdijmkalfcifomdhmcbe) or [Socialite for Firefox](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/socialite/) that allow you to post a link to any page to Reddit by clicking a single button.
  • Some subreddits use a modified template where the labels and location of the "Submit a new link" and "Submit a new text post" can differ from the default ones. For example, [/r/funny](http://www.reddit.com/r/funny/) uses "Submit a humorous link" and "Submit a comical text post" as labels for its submission buttons.
  • Do not link only to content that you own, such as your website, YouTube account or blog, as doing so can get you shadowbanned -- the Reddit equivalent of shouting in the desert, where you can still make posts but no one is able to read them. As a rule, only 10 percent of the links you post on Reddit can point to your own sites or social media accounts.
