How to Change iCal

The iCal calendar application on your Macintosh computer manages your events, tasks and invitations by organizing the calendars with categories; the program then color codes each category to distinguish between multiple calendars. While the default calendars in iCal include home and work, you can also rename your calendars or add additional categories for better organization. Once you change the information in your iCal calendars, any Apple device linked to iCal updates with the new data to keep events, calendars and reminders current.

  • Click iCal on the Mac's desktop to launch the application or launch iCal from your applications folder. Click "iCal" at the top of the application's menu. Click "Preferences" in the sub-menu.

  • Click the General icon, and click the drop-down menu next to "Days per week" to adjust the number of days displayed in the iCal application.

  • Click the "Start week on" drop-down menu to select what day to start a new week and click the "Scroll in week view by" menu to switch between days or weeks. The left and right arrow buttons in the iCal application allow you to flip back or forward between weeks or days when clicked.

  • Click the day start and ending times to adjust how events are displayed in your calendar. Click "Show" to adjust how many hours to show on the screen. By default, iCal displays 12 hours at a time.

  • Click the red button in the top-left corner to save the settings. Right-click the calendar's name in the iCal's side menu, and click "Get Info" to open the calendar's properties.

  • Delete and enter a new name to customize the calendar's title. Click the color bar next to the title to change the assigned color for the calendar. Click "OK" to save and apply the changes you made to iCal.
