How to Clean Grating thumbnail
Keeping a grill clean allows you to use it frequently with safety.

The most commonly cleaned grates in most houses are stove-top grates and grill grates. These grates become dirty from food splatter and direct grilling and it is important to keep both clean for sanitary and safety reasons. Stove-top grates are designed to be removed to the sink for cleaning. Outside grills sometimes have removable grill pieces for annual cleaning but most grate cleaning is done with the grill intact. Instructions

  1. Cleaning Grill Grates

    • 1

Clean the grates on an outdoor grill after cooking on the grill while it is still hot. Brush the grates with a brass wire brush to remove all remaining food debris from the grates.

    • 2

Brush the grates before you begin grilling using the brass wire brush. By brushing after and before the grates will stay reasonably clean over a summer season. When the main grilling season is finished and before you put the grill away for the winter, clean the grates thoroughly and remove your grease traps.

    • 3

Fill a large plastic tub with hot, soapy water. Place the grill and tub over a grassy area. Remove the cold grill grates and insert them in the hot water. Scrub the grates with a scrubber to thoroughly clean them. Rinse the grates with fresh water and dry them with a towel.

    • 4

Brush the inside of the grill casing and scrub the walls down with the water and soap and the scrubber. Remove the grease trap and clean the tray. You may need to change the water several times to really clean the grill. Wash the outside of the grill last and towel it dry. Put the grill back together and cover it before placing it in winter storage.

    Clean Stove Grates

    • 5

Allow the grates to cool until you can handle them easily.

    • 6

Remove the grates from the stove top to a sink full of hot, soapy water. Scrub the grates and use a silicone scraper to remove hard stuck-on food residues. Rinse with fresh water. Dry with a towel.

    • 7

Clean the stove top pan and wipe it dry before replacing the grates. Encourage persons using the stove to clean the stove after each messy meal to prevent grime from building up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hang the brass brush on the outside grill so that it is handy for each time you grill. Materials left on grates can catch fire easily, which is why they should be removed immediately.
