1
Make four chain stitches and join with a slip stitch to form a circle. Chain 1 and make 6 single crochet stitches into this circle; join with a slip stitch to close the round.
-
2
Increase the width of your hat. For Round 1, chain 1 and make 2 single crochets in every stitch around, then join with a slip stitch. In Round 3, chain 1 and make the following pattern around: 2 single crochets in the first stitch followed by 1 single crochet in the next stitch; join with a slip stitch at the end of the Round. For Round 4, chain 1 and make 2 single crochets in the first stitch followed by 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches; repeat this pattern around and close with a slip stitch.

Continue to increase the width of your hat by adding 1 more individual single crochet to the pattern you repeat for every round. When the circumference of the hat is approximately 1 inch smaller than the circumference of your head, stop increasing.
-
4
Crochet the sides of the hat evenly. To do this, chain 1 and make 1 single crochet in each stitch around. Repeat this process until the hat is long enough to cover just the tops of your ears.
-
5
Crochet the brim of the hat. For the next round, make two single crochets in every stitch around; this will make the brim wider than the base of the hat. Join with a slip stitch, then chain one and make one single crochet in every stitch around. Repeat this last round for three more rounds so your brim has a total of five rounds.
-
6
Make a slip stitch to close the final round of your brim. Cut your working yarn with scissors, leaving a 4-inch tail. Pull this tail all the way through the slip stitch to finish off the hat, then thread the tail onto an embroidery needle and weave it through the stitches on the underside of the brim to hide it. Weave in any remaining ends and your hat is ready to wear.
