Learn to crochet doublestich, more commonly known as "double crochet," for a versatile stitch used in many patterns. With double crochet, you can make scarves, shawls, afghans, dishcloths and more. Double crochet builds upon the fundamental crochet techniques such as making a chain and single crochet stitches. Utilize double crochet stitches to add height to the rows of your crochet project or to create looser weave crochet item than a single crochet stitched item.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a chain consisting of two more chain stitches than the desired number of double crochet stitches for your item.

To make a chain, place a slip knot near the tip of the crochet hook, and "yarn over": wrap the yarn around the hook's tip from the back to the front of the hook, catching the yarn with the hook's tip. Draw the tip of the hook through the slip knot; this forms a new loop on the hook.

    • 2

Draw the yarn over the hook as in Step 1; place the crochet hook through the middle of the fourth chain stitch from the hook, from the front of the stitch to the back.

    • 3

Draw the yarn over the hook; pull the hook through the chain stitch. A new loop is on the hook; there should be three loops on the hook.

    • 4

Draw the yarn over the hook; pull the hook through two of the loops on the hook, leaving two loops remaining.

    • 5

Draw the yarn over the hook once more; pull the hook through the two loops on the hook to complete the double crochet stitch.
