How to Hide the Top Layer in GIMP

Image manipulation programs, such as GIMP, allow the user to stack effects or images on top of one another using layers. These layers give the user the flexibility to work non-destructively, that is, to alter one layer without affecting the layer below it. Sometimes, a user may want to turn off the top layer to view or more conveniently manipulate the lower layers. You can toggle the visibility of this top layer by using the Visibility icon.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the Windows menu on the GIMP menu bar and select "Dockable Dialogs," then "Layers" to make sure the Layers dialog box is open.

    • 2

Scroll through the layers, if necessary, until you reach the top.

    • 3

Click the Visibility icon to hide the layer. This icon looks like an eye and disappears when the layer is invisible.
